Schools in Madagascar

Our commitment in the African island country

Childhood in Madagascar

Madagascar is one of the five poorest countries in the world. The educational situation is precarious – according to Unicef, only one third of the children there completes elementary school. During our first visit in November 2022, we saw with our own eyes how desolate the conditions were. Poverty is very common. Hunger is the norm in this African island country. Many children have to work. All the schools we saw were severely run down. Often teaching took place outdoors. There was seldom any furniture, unbroken roofs, not to mention school supplies, water or food.

Our commitment

Since December 2022, we support the elementary school Ecole primaire publique Tsivonoe near Toliara. The school includes five grades and one preschool class. For the 234 schoolchildren, the school has only two run-down rooms at its disposal. For this reason – and due to a lack of teachers – classes are on double-shift and partly take place open air. There are 14 teachers at the school, but only six of them are marginally paid. The remaining eight are volunteers who do not receive a salary, so they have to rely on additional jobs outside of school. This not only means frequent lesson cancellations, it also isn’t motivating for the teachers. When we visited in November 2022, just half of the children were present. Of those who came, many didn’t even have a pen or notebook with them – much less food or water.

Since September 2023, we support the Collège d’enseignement général Mangily near Toliara – the secondary school to which the children from Tsivonoe elementary school transfer after completing primary school. Mangily Secondary School comprises four grades with a total of 379 schoolchildren in 7 classes. Of the 19 teachers, only 12 are paid by the state.

Our activities

School supplies

We equip schoolchildren and teachers with a basic requirement for good learning and teaching: School and teaching materials. Most families are too poor to pay for school supplies themselves. The costs for Tsivonoe Primary School are covered by our corporate partner. The costs for Mangily secondary school are covered for the 2023/24 school year thanks to a grant by the German Postcode Lottery. We are still urgently looking for support for the coming school year – please get in touch if you are interested!

Lunch

We provide the schoolchildren at Tsivonoe Primary School with a balanced lunch every school day. School lunch is an important incentive for parents to send their children to school regularly. The lunch is freshly cooked by two cooks in a temporary canteen that we have built and equipped for this purpose. We are still looking for sponsors to secure school lunch – we appreciate your support!

Drinking water

At Tsivone elementary school, we have ensured that the school is supplied with drinking water by building a pipeline to the nearest cistern. Thanks to a grant from the German Postcode Lottery, we have repaired a well at Mangily secondary school.

Hygiene

We have also introduced our hygiene program at Tsivonoe Primary School with the school year 2023/24. The children are taught basic hygiene rules on a regular basis. To reinforce these rules at school, we provide the children with soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste so that they can wash and brush their teeth together in the morning.

Teachers

We pay teachers a (supplementary) salary so that they don’t have to rely on so many jobs outside of school and so that classes can take place. Before our engagement began, classes were frequently cancelled. The costs for Tsivonoe Primary School are covered by our corporate partner. Trainings for teachers

We want to improve the quality of teaching through regular professional and pedagogical training of teachers. The first training already took place in December 2022. The costs for Tsivonoe Primary School are covered by our corporate partner. Library

In fall 2023, thanks to funding by the German Postcode Lottery, we will set up a library at Mangily Secondary School, which the school community had requested. The schoolchildren can learn and read in this protected space. We also employ a librarian to look after the stock.

The Tsivonoe elementary school is supported by our partner Anlagegold24.

Planned measures

School building

After a typhoon in 2015, a school building was destroyed and not rebuilt. These classrooms are urgently needed. Currently, the school has only two classrooms available. Classes are staggered in the mornings and afternoons, and some are held outdoors. We plan to build a new school building.

Place of carefree childhood

The school should also become a place for the children where they can simply be a child without too many worries and play. For this we want to purchase balls and other toys and thus give them joy.

Shree Arunodaya School

We urgently need support to be able to provide all schoolchildren at Tsivonoe Primary School with a balanced lunch.

Our educational projects at a glance

In other regions of the world, too, school is unfortunately not part of every child’s everyday life. A Bleistift FOR EVERYONE is committed to improving education in developing countries and supports schools and education projects worldwide.

Buy & do good!

Combine the useful with the meaningful – support our mission by buying our products! For every pencil you buy, a child in a developing country receives one of our pencils; for every notepad $1 goes to one of our education projects. Our other products also help to fund our educational activities. We offer companies, educational institutions and other organizations products in their own branding – as meaningful and practical promotional gifts (examples here). Get in touch if you are interested!

A Bleistift FOR EVERYONE links two particularly important aspects: conscious consumption & social commitment. Here I know that my support will arrive without detours where it is needed most urgently!

We need school supply at the beginning of each new school year. I think it’s great that you can combine what you need with a good cause and help disadvantaged children. Not everyone has the chance to go to school.
