Life in the mountains
In the remote Simthali region at the foot of the Himalayan Mountains, people work in the fields every day – living off what they have grown. Their hard work takes its toll. Since they hardly have any money, they mainly barter. There is a lack of everything that needs to be bought, such as pens, books, shoes.
Many have realized that education is the key to a better life. The families who can afford it send their children to school in Kathmandu at a young age. There, the children live in homes. Many children break down because they are separated from their parents and have to live on their own, they join a gang or end up as street children. A school in their home region enables children to receive education while staying with their families.
Ram Hari Khadka, founder of our partner organization Indreni, has himself lived as a street child in Kathmandu. With the support of an aid organization, Ram managed to turn his life around – he graduated from school and now runs his own organization which supports schools in mountain villages, among other things. Together with Indreni we support two schools in the foothills of the Himalayas – since the beginning of 2020 the Mountain School Simthali (Shree Setidevi Basic School) with 90 school children and since fall 2021 the Shree Arunodaya Higher Secondary School with over 250 school children in grades 1-12.

Our activities
Teaching and support staff
We have hired additional teaching and support staff to ensure regular and qualified instruction for all school children.
Lunch
Many families in the villages are so poor that their children can’t take lunch to school. No one can learn well on an empty stomach. We provide the school children with a school lunch, which is financed by sponsorships. The certainty of being able to eat something at lunchtime is a great gift for the children. It is also an important incentive for parents to send their children to school regularly. We are still looking for sponsors for the Shree Arunodaya School, which we have been supporting since fall 2021.
Library
In 2020 and 2022, thanks to generous donations, we established libraries and hired a librarian at both schools. This was urgently needed because there was no protected place where the school children could do their homework and study. In addition, there were not enough textbooks for all the children and the existing copies were badly tattered. The librarian supervises the children with their homework and thus supports a sustainable transfer of knowledge.
School uniforms
In Nepal, it is customary to wear a school uniform. The existing clothes are old and worn. Even with the best care, they do not last forever. A school uniform is considered a privilege and the children are immensely proud to wear it. Also for health reasons, it is important for us to equip the children with seasonally appropriate clothing and shoes – especially in winter, warm clothing and suitable shoes are essential, as most children have a long way to school.
School materials
Before our support began, both schools lacked everything: there were hardly any notebooks, paper, pens. This made learning and teaching difficult. Now we regularly provide the schools with school materials.
English lessons
With an English teacher we provide qualified English lessons.
Hygiene
We are also committed to gradually improving the health of children. For this, it is important to teach them basic hygiene rules. In the middle of 2022, thanks to the support of the BNI Foundation Germany and BNI International, we were able to equip all school children of the Mountain School Simthali with soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, so that they can wash and brush their teeth together in the morning before class. School uniforms are left at school during the week and taken home on weekends to be washed.
Joy
Thanks to a generous donation, we built a play structure at the Simthali Mountain School in 2021, which has since been used with great enthusiasm by the children. The jungle gym not only improves the children’s motoric skills – it was also important to us to give the children joy.
Safe school premises
The Mountain School Simthali is located on a hilltop. Some slopes are quite steep. We built a fence so that the school children can play and run in the schoolyard safely. Also, the school property is better protected from trespassing (also from dogs…).

Trainings for teachers
We want to improve the quality of teaching through regular professional and pedagogical training of teachers.
Support for other schools
There are two other schools in the Simthali region: Kalidevi Primary School and Banadevi Primary and Secondary School. Here, too, we would like to improve the teaching and learning conditions in order to provide more children with a sound school education and thus improve the living conditions in this remote region in the long run.

Our school has been a supporter of A Bleistift FOR EVERYONE from the beginning and we have been following the rapid development of this organization with great enthusiasm. Educational equity is a big issue especially for us as an educational institution.
